• Fitted a brand-new battery. It reports 100% of design capacity on zero charge cycles. On a machine this age the battery is the part most likely to be worn out, and here it is new.
• Repasted and deep-cleaned. We took off both the bottom and the keyboard side, cleaned it out thoroughly and put fresh thermal paste on the processor, so it runs cool and quiet.
• Clean Ubuntu install. Installed fresh and tested, with one account set up. We send you its username and password; change the password or add your own account in Settings → Users in a minute.
• Wiped. The drive was cleared and the OS installed fresh, so nothing of any previous owner remains.
• Measured the wear parts rather than estimating them. The battery and drive figures above are what the hardware reports.

Your choice of operating system — no extra charge

It ships with Ubuntu installed. If you would rather have something else, message us after you buy and we will install it, test it and ship it the same way, at no charge. We will try to accommodate any OS request. Some popular options are below:

• Ubuntu — what it ships with. The most widely used, with the most help online.
• Linux Mint — the easiest switch from Windows.
• Debian — stable and conservative.
• Fedora — newer software on a clean GNOME desktop.
• Windows 11 Pro — activated, clean install, no bloatware.

Cosmetic condition

Good — normal wear for a business machine: some shine on the palm rest and keys, and a few light marks on the screen that are hard to see once it is on. The photos are of the exact machine you will receive, shot close up rather than at a flattering angle.

What to know before you buy

A few keys are slightly firmer than the rest. Every key works and registers; a handful just take a touch more pressure.

The memory is 8GB, soldered to the board. The X280 has no memory slot, so 8GB is what it has for life. It handles web, email, office work and a sensible number of browser tabs comfortably.

No charger is included. It charges over USB-C Power Delivery, so any 65W USB-C charger works — the one from a recent laptop, or a $20 charger from anywhere.

In the box

The laptop. No charger, no original box, no manuals, no dock.

Warranty & returns. 30 days. If it fails in that window, send it back and we refund you in full. This machine is out of Lenovo factory coverage, so our 30 days is the warranty. Shipped in a padded laptop sleeve inside a box cut close to the machine, leaving virtually no room for error. Questions before you buy? Message us through .
