Up for sale is a rare, collector-grade NEC MultiSpeed HD (Model PC-16-03) portable computer. Manufactured in Japan, this was one of the most powerful "lunchbox" style portables of the late 1980s. This is a remarkably complete "survivor" set, including the original branded carrying case and hard-to-find proprietary power components.
Technical Condition:
- Power: The unit powers on successfully using the included AC adapter.
- Display: The Super-twist LCD screen is bright and clear with good contrast (see photos).
- Internal Status: Upon startup, the system displays a "1701" error and a "Fixed disk controller is bad or LOW POWER" warning. This indicates the 20MB internal hard drive is not currently initializing.
- Keyboard/Hardware: All keys are present and the physical chassis is in excellent cosmetic condition for its age.
What’s Included in the Bundle:
- NEC MultiSpeed HD Laptop (Model PC-16-03)
Original NEC Padded Carrying Bag (Great condition with logo) **Interior of carrying bag shows white powdery residue (likely mildew or foam breakdown) from long-term storage. Sold as-found and may require a light cleaning.**
- Original NEC Shoulder Strap
- Original NEC PAD-102 AC Power Adapter (Tested and working)
- NEC PC-16-61 Modem Guide/Manual
- Original ROM Chips (Installed)
Specs for Collectors:
- CPU: NEC V30 (Dual Speed 4.77/9.54 MHz)
- Storage: 20MB Internal Hard Drive (Currently throwing 1701 error)
- Floppy Drive: 3.5" 720KB Drive
Shipping & Handling:
This unit is heavy and fragile. It will be professionally packed with ample padding to ensure it arrives in the condition shown.
Note to Buyer: Due to the age of this hardware and the noted hard drive error, this item is being sold As-Is for parts or restoration. It is a fantastic candidate for a vintage tech enthusiast or YouTuber looking for a complete restoration project.
