The Altec Lansing FX5051 is a 5.1-channel computer speaker system designed primarily for gaming and movies. Its standout feature, especially for its era, is USB plug-and-play connectivity, which allows it to deliver discrete 6-channel surround sound without requiring a specialized internal sound card.
Key Specifications
Audio Configuration: 5.1 Surround Sound (4 satellites, 1 center channel, and 1 subwoofer).
Total Power: 89 watts RMS total continuous power.
Frequency Response: 30 Hz to 20 kHz.
Subwoofer Design: Features dual 6.5-inch long-throw woofers in an isobaric configuration, which aims to provide deep bass in a more compact enclosure.
Connectivity & Compatibility
USB Connection: Supports multi-channel audio for Windows PCs (98SE, 2000, ME, XP, or Vista), making it a popular choice for laptop users who lacks built-in 5.1 support.
Analog Inputs: Includes three 3.5mm stereo mini-jacks for traditional front, rear, and center/LFE connections.
Mac Compatibility: While USB works on macOS, it is typically limited to 2/4 channel audio rather than true 5.1.
Auxiliary Input: A mini-jack input is located on the control pod for quick connection to mobile devices.
Design & Control
Satellites: The speakers feature dual drivers (one midrange and one tweeter) and come with removable cast-metal stands that can be replaced with wall mounts.
Control Pod: A wired pod manages master, center, and rear volume, as well as bass and treble levels. It also features a headphone jack.
Wireless Remote: A full-function remote is included to adjust audio settings from a distance.
While this system is older, it remains a notable "bridge" device for its ability to provide high-quality surround sound via a simple USB connection, which can be particularly useful for expanding the audio capabilities of a laptop-based workstation.
