USB Colorimeter · Measures Your Monitor · Builds the Profile

Datacolor’s Spyder5 Express: the little USB colorimeter that reads your monitor and writes the correction profile, so what you grade is what everyone else sees. Sensor, attached USB cable, insert card, and the original box. Software comes from Datacolor’s site; check their current OS support before buying.

01A Little Story · Admitted Fiction Spyder5

A small fiction, because good objects deserve one. The facts live in 02 and 03.

Monitors lie. Every editor learns it the expensive way, usually the week a client calls about skin tones. This little puck was the house polygraph. Once a month it hung off the front of the screen like a listener at a keyhole, read the panel’s confessions for a few quiet minutes, and wrote the correction file that kept everybody honest. Oranges stayed orange. Grays stopped drifting green at 2 a.m.

It worked in the dark, literally: lights off, blinds drawn, the way calibration likes it. Then it coiled its cable back into the box, next to the thank-you card printed in nine languages. The box shows its miles. The sensor never cared about the box.
