The Holy Grail of Retro Disc Archiving: LG GDR-8164B in External Galaxy Metal Gear Enclosure
If you know optical drive telemetry, you know exactly what this is. The Hitachi-LG GDR-8164B (HP P/N: 390849-002, FW 0B10) is legendary in the emulation and preservation community. It stands as one of the extremely rare 5.25" PC optical drives hardware-capable of reading the raw Burst Cutting Area (BCA) and reverse-spun disc structures of Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo Wii optical media.
Combined with tools like RawDump 2.0 or FriiDump, this drive allows clean, 1:1 bit-for-bit ISO rips of your physical GameCube and Wii disc library directly to your PC over USB—saving your original console laser pickups from unnecessary wear and tear.
