SMC EtherEZ 8416BTA 16-Bit ISA Ethernet Card🌐 Three Ways to Connect a Vintage PC
Offered here is an authentic SMC EtherEZ 8416BTA 10 Mbps Ethernet adapter, built for computers with a conventional 16-bit ISA expansion slot.
The 8416BTA provides all three of the common Ethernet connection standards encountered in a well-equipped 1990s PC:
RJ-45 for 10BASE-T twisted-pair Ethernet
BNC for 10BASE2 thin-coax Ethernet
DB-15 AUI for an external Ethernet transceiver or MAU
That combination made the card useful during the transition from coaxial Ethernet installations to the RJ-45 networks that ultimately became standard.
💾 The EtherEZ Generation
SMC’s EtherEZ family followed the company’s earlier Elite and Ultra ISA Ethernet adapters. It combined the Ethernet controller, bus interface and configuration functions into SMC’s proprietary 83C795 controller.
The EtherEZ series was designed around the ISA Plug and Play standard, reducing the IRQ, I/O-address and memory-configuration ritual associated with many earlier network cards. Appropriate period drivers and operating-system support are still required.
This card is well suited for:
DOS and early Windows networking projects
Windows 3.x and Windows 95-era systems
Novell NetWare client installations
Vintage LAN gaming
10BASE2 coaxial-network 486 and early Pentium restorations
Hardware collections and display

One SMC EtherEZ 8416BTA network adapter
Original full-height mounting bracket
Installed components and connectors shown in the photographs
Only the network card shown is included.
The following are not included:
💡 About the Empty Socket
The large socket near the upper portion of the board is intended for an optional network boot ROM. The socket is empty, and no boot ROM is installed.
A boot ROM was not required for ordinary Ethernet operation. It was primarily used to start a computer from a network server without relying on a local bootable disk.
🧩 Physical Condition
The PCB, ISA contacts, connectors and visible components appear clean and complete. The mounting bracket shows normal age-related handling wear and discoloration.
A small yellow handwritten identification sticker remains attached to the metal transformer housing beside the RJ-45 connector.
Please examine all photographs carefully. They show the exact card being offered and form an important part of the condition description.
⚙️ Installation Notes
This is a vintage 16-bit ISA expansion card intended for appropriately equipped computers. Successful installation requires a compatible ISA slot, suitable drivers and correct system configuration.
The BNC connection is intended for a properly constructed 10BASE2 network using the appropriate coaxial cable, T-connectors and 50-ohm termination. The DB-15 AUI port requires a compatible external transceiver when used.
📦 Shipping and Packaging
The card will be enclosed in anti-static protective material, supported against bending and packed inside a sturdy shipping carton. Particular care will be taken to protect the circuit board, ISA edge connector, bracket and external ports.
Free shipping with tracking is included.
